Growing vines in the UK...
English wines are coming up trumps in international contests as climate change makes wine production viable even this far up in the northern hemisphere. London may have a further advantage as Pete Falloon, from the Met Office explains: “Urban areas are between two to five degrees hotter than rural areas, as heat is stored within concrete, creating an ‘urban island heat effect’”. London, being a major city, is warmer than its surrounds and provides a temperate climate for vines. There are numerous white and red grape varieties that grow well in the UK and are ideal for wine making. Many have been bred to be disease resistant and do not need to over-ripen to produce good results – vital for our sporadically sunny English summer. The vine will need a sunny place to grow and a wall or support to grow up. Our members grow vines in gardens, allotments, and roof terraces. We provide expert advice and on-going support for members to get the best quality grapes from their vine. Join us today and start growing something more rewarding than the average flower.
The Harvest...watch our film!
Like proud parents we are really chuffed with our film showing the 2009 harvest. It’s lovely to see members being so enthusiastic about the urban wine movement and check out the quality of our grapes! It’s now on YouTube.
